    Methodology development for evaluation of selective-fidelity rotorcraft simulation

    This paper addressed the initial step toward the goal of establishing performance and handling qualities acceptance criteria for realtime rotorcraft simulators through a planned research effort to quantify the system capabilities of 'selective fidelity' simulators. Within this framework the simulator is then classified based on the required task. The simulator is evaluated by separating the various subsystems (visual, motion, etc.) and applying corresponding fidelity constants based on the specific task. This methodology not only provides an assessment technique, but also provides a technique to determine the required levels of subsystem fidelity for a specific task

    Envelope Protection for Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    This paper describes the design, development, and testing of an automatic envelope protection system as implemented on Georgia Institute of Technology's unmanned helicopter GTMax. The envelope protection system makes use of online-learning adaptive neural networks to generate online dynamic models, which are used to estimate limits on controller commands. The system provides command capability up to the limit boundaries while preventing envelope exceedance. Simulation and flight-test results are provided for load factor and rotor stall limit protection during aggressive maneuvering

    A method for performance envelope boundary cueing for a vehicle control system comprises the steps of formulating a prediction system for a neural network and training the neural network to predict values of limited parameters as a function of current control positions and current vehicle operating conditions. The method further comprises the steps of applying the neural network to the control system of the vehicle, where the vehicle has capability for measuring current control positions and current vehicle operating conditions. The neural network generates a map of current control positions and vehicle operating conditions versus the limited parameters in a pre-determined vehicle operating condition. The method estimates critical control deflections from the current control positions required to drive the vehicle to a performance envelope boundary. Finally, the method comprises the steps of communicating the critical control deflection to the vehicle control system; and driving the vehicle control system to provide a tactile cue to an operator of the vehicle as the control positions approach the critical control deflections

    Standardization of C<SUP>14</SUP> stock solution and filter efficiency in the comparison of primary productivity measurements

    Parallel experiments using natural populations were conducted to find out the variability of values of organic production obtained by two different C14 stock solutions, standardization techniques and counting systems as well as the relative efficiency of three types of filters. The results indicate that a uniform method of standardization of stock solution and a careful selection of filters are necessary more than anything else if values of organic production obtained by different workers are to be compared
